What is a retainer, and why do you need one?
A retainer is a custom appliance that holds your teeth in place after orthodontic treatment. Teeth tend to drift back toward their original position over time, which is why retention matters as much as the treatment itself.
Even after your teeth look finished, the bone around them is still settling. Your retainer helps keep your results stable while that happens. We will set a wear schedule that fits your teeth.
Clear removable retainers
A clear retainer is a thin, molded plastic tray that fits snugly over your teeth. It is discreet and comfortable for many patients, but it can wear down over time and should be removed for meals.
Wire and acrylic removable retainers
A Hawley retainer combines a thin metal wire across the front teeth with an acrylic base shaped to your mouth. It is durable and can be adjusted if needed, though it is more visible than a clear retainer.
Fixed retainers
A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth. You do not have to remember to wear it, but it needs extra care when flossing and can be harder to clean.
Caring for your retainer
Clean your retainer every day, and brush your teeth before you put it back in so you are not trapping food and plaque. Rinse it in cool water and brush it gently with soap.
Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic, and harsh cleaners, which can wear it down. Keep it in its case when it is not in your mouth, and keep it away from pets, who like to chew on them.
For fixed retainers, floss under and around the wire every day, and avoid hard or sticky foods that can loosen the bond.
Lost or broken your retainer?
Please do not wait. Teeth can start to shift quickly once a retainer is missing or broken, and a damaged retainer can irritate your gums and cheeks. Call us to schedule a visit for a replacement, and we will check the fit before making a new one.
Retainers vs. night guards
Retainers and night guards look similar, but they do different jobs. A retainer holds your teeth in their corrected position after orthodontic treatment. A night guard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching during sleep. If you are not sure which one you need, we will help you sort it out. Learn more about night guards.
Retainers after Invisalign
If you just finished Invisalign, your retainer is the final step that keeps your results in place. We will walk you through your wear schedule, which usually starts with full-time wear and then moves to nights. Learn more about Invisalign.
Insurance & Payment
Fair, Fixed Rate
At Excel Dental, we are primarily an out-of-network or “fee-for-service” dental-care provider. This allows us to charge a fair, fixed rate for procedures rather than having to apply extra fees required by third-party insurance companies.
Whatever your situation and budget, we are dedicated to providing you with straightforward estimates and helping you navigate any financial obstacles you may be facing.

Common Questions
Do I have to wear my retainer forever?
Most people wear it full-time at first and then move to nights, and orthodontic sources generally describe that nighttime wear as a long-term habit. We will set a schedule that fits your teeth.
What should I do if my retainer feels tight or no longer fits?
Call us soon. A snug retainer usually means your teeth have started to move, and the longer you wait, the harder it is to get a good fit back.
Should I take my retainer out to eat?
Yes. Remove a removable retainer for meals and snacks, then put it in its case rather than wrapping it in a napkin. Brush and floss before you pop it back in.
Is it normal for a retainer to feel uncomfortable?
Some soreness in the first days is common as your mouth adjusts. If the discomfort lingers, let us know so we can check the fit.
Does insurance cover a replacement retainer?
Coverage varies by plan, and replacements are often handled separately from the first set. We will check your benefits and walk you through your options before you commit.
